Microware Systems Corporation, Espial Group Inc., and RADVision Inc., Technology Partner for Web Phone Development

June 15, 1999
15 June 1999: Microware Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: MWAR), developer of the industry-leading OS-9 real-time operating system (RTOS) announced today a complete and tested software solution for web phone developers. Microware's PersonalJava for OS-9, coupled with Espial Group's Espial development tools and Internet Application Suite, and RADVision's Voice over IP technology provides everything needed for complete "IP telephony" and Internet access in embedded devices.

Frost & Sullivan expects the overall voice over IP market to grow at a rate of 149 percent each year through 2001, amounting to about $1.89 billion. Killen & Associates expects the voice over IP services market to grow to $9.4 billion by 2002, an increase from their 1997 prediction of $123 million.

"The news to developers is that a working, tested and reliable solution for voice over IP is now available due to the advance work of three leaders in technology," said Bob Egner, product director at Microware. "Microware's OS-9 meets the performance standards for this environment and provides the productivity and flexibility of PersonalJava. Espial's Internet Application Suite for consumer and embedded Internet appliances coupled with Voice over IP protocol stack from RADVision make development of Internet telephony, Internet access and video conferencing applications fast and easy. Collectively, it's an integrated software package that makes embedded devices easy to use for consumers."

Microware's PersonalJava for OS-9 is a robust virtual machine, optimized and integrated with OS-9 for embedded devices requiring Java. The modular architecture of OS-9 enables the implementation of Espial's development tools and Internet application suite and RADVision software for the development of Web phone or other devices requiring advanced networking features.

Espial Espresso is the industry's only lightweight graphical user interface toolkit for embedded Java applications. It is ideal for developing applications for smart phones, set-top boxes, hand-held, mobile and other Internet devices.

Together with Espial Architect, a rapid visual development environment and Espial's Internet Application Suite, Espial Group provides complete application development and browsing functionality for such networked electronic devices. "Espial's Internet application suite and Espial development tools exhibit superior performance under Microware's PersonalJava for OS-9" said Jaison Dolvane, president of Espial Group Inc. "OS-9 provides Internet device developers a real advantage due to Microware's Java history, and a proven track record of reducing development time for their customers."

The H.323 Protocol Stack is a package of software modules performing all the functions that are needed to establish a VoIP and multimedia conferencing sessions over IP data networks. It enables OEMs/developers to rapidly bring to market interoperable H.323-compliant products eliminating months of software development time. RADVision's Protocol Stack supports optional add-on modules for H.450.x supplementary services and H.235 security. RADVision has a long-standing history of being first-to-market with superior technology. It has won several "Product of the Year" Awards for its "building blocks" for voice, video and data convergence. RADVision's building blocks are used by many of the key industry leaders including 3COM, Compaq, Dialogic, Natural Microsystems, Nortel, Polycom, Siemens and Telogy.

"There is a growing demand for IP-based telephony solutions that support open systems, deliver a high level of interoperability, are simple to manage, provide critical telephony functions and address security concerns," said Michelle Blank, president of RADVision. "The modular architecture of Microware's OS-9 and our H.323 meets the multiple requirements developers need for efficient voice, video, and data collaboration."

This collective web phone solution is currently available for the Hitachi SuperH, Intel StrongArm, and Power PC processors. "Everything a web phone developer needs to successfully produce a device is available now," added Egner.
